Embryo Donation

Embryo donation is a process in which a couple or individual with remaining embryos from a previous in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle donates those embryos to another person or couple who are struggling with infertility. These donated embryos can then be implanted into the recipient's uterus to achieve pregnancy. Here’s a more detailed explanation:

1. **Creation of Embryos**: In IVF, eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a lab to create embryos. Sometimes, more embryos are created than are needed.

2. **Donation Decision**: Couples or individuals with leftover embryos can choose to donate them to others who cannot conceive naturally or through their own IVF cycles.

3. **Recipient Preparation**: The recipient undergoes medical and psychological evaluations to ensure they are ready for the embryo transfer. Their uterus is prepared to receive the embryo through hormonal treatments. This could be to the Intended Parent or a Surrogate carrying for the Intended Parent(s).

4. **Embryo Transfer**: The donated embryo is thawed and then implanted into the recipient’s uterus in a procedure similar to a simple gynecological exam.

5. **Pregnancy**: If successful, the embryo implants in the uterus, and the recipient carries the pregnancy to term, just like any other pregnancy.

Embryo donation provides a valuable option for those struggling with infertility, offering a chance to experience pregnancy and childbirth. It also gives a hopeful purpose to embryos that might otherwise remain unused.

Getting Started...

Just like most areas of ART, you'll want to make sure you check out the ASRM when it comes to the necessary guidelines, you'll have to follow in order to adopt embryos. You'll need a qualified attorney to draft your contract in order to make sure that all guidelines and requirements are followed. Most clinics do not accept the risks involved.
